Peformance

The body of the Black queer individual is subjected to fetishistic exploitation and commodification from a young age, creating a damaging relationship with the self. The fetishizers engage in a violent process of extraction, stripping the youthful body of its innocence and autonomy. As Black queer individuals, we are perpetually placed under a microscope to be analyzed. My intention with this work is to understand the masking of the self, the contorting, numbing, and rearranging depending on one's interactions. In this context, one is always performing, being viewed, and dissected by others. The pain and strife that accompany the choice of an identity involve the performance and conformity required to exist in a post-colonial world as well as the necessity of allowing oneself to embody this abstract, queer identity, which is constantly morphing, being perceived, objectified, and disintegrated.
